Alongside those rich Nigerian traditions, my parents also gave me another incredible gift: a deep love for the French language. They enrolled us in French summer programs in elementary school, and that appreciation stayed with me all the way through college. (So naturally, the deep French roots of New Orleans and Mardi Gras have always fascinated me!)

When I first moved to Wyoming for pharmacy school, holidays like Halloween and Mardi Gras were mostly just background noise. I was the girl with my head buried in my textbooks! It wasn’t until I watched the TV series The Originals—which is set right in the vibrant heart of the French Quarter—and heard stories from a friend’s trip to New Orleans that I realized what a massive, colorful cultural event Mardi Gras really is.

Now, as a mom, my perspective has completely shifted.

I no longer want to just observe from the sidelines. I want my children to acknowledge and appreciate other people’s cultures. Just like I got to experience a beautiful Diwali night in college wearing a sari gifted by a friend, I see Mardi Gras as a wonderful cultural learning moment. It’s a chance to talk about tradition, identity, and joy.
